Eating fruit and vegetables that contain high levels of flavonoids – such as apples, pears and berries – could keep weight off, according to a study published in The British Medical Journal.
Dietary flavonoids have been linked to weight loss in the past, but the most studies have looked at a particular flavonoids found in green tea. So, a team of researchers examined the association between the dietary intake of seven flavonoids and weight change in a study of 124,086 men and women in the US over 24 year period. Findings revealed that increased flavonoids intake was associated with less weight gain. The greatest link was found for anthocyanins (found in blueberries and strawberries) and flavonols (mainly found in tea and apples). Orange juice and oranges as well as onions also contributed to flavonoids that were said to help maintain weight.
