Electrolysis Hair Removal

What is Electrolysis?

Superfluous hair, although quite natural, is a problem for many women. Electrolysis is the only proven method of permanent hair removal and it involves the insertion of a fine probe into the hair follicle to the hair root. Electrolysis uses a mild current that is passed down the needle to the tip, this then cauterizes the hair root enabling the hair to be withdrawn. The Electrolysis process only takes a few seconds, per hair.

Can it be performed on any part of the body?

The areas where superfluous hair can become a problem and which are suitable for hair removal treatment are facial areas, upper lip, chin, neck, sides of the face, low hair line, thick eyebrows, between the brows, eyebrow shaping, arms, underarms, between the breasts, around the nipples, legs, thighs, bikini line, abdomen, back and shoulders, fingers and toes. Hair removal for areas including the inside of the nostril, the ears and eyelids are not usually treated with Electrolysis.

How will it feel?

The sensation felt during electrolysis treatment varies greatly and depends on several factors including client pain threshold, settings used during treatment and for women, hormonal activity. Treatments can be performed at low settings with almost zero pain but will require many more treatments than would be needed for sessions using higher settings.

We do offer solutions for pain management so please speak to our wonderful therapists to find out more.

How do I care for the area after treatment?

Depskin has specially formulated aftercare lotions and swabs for use post electrolysis. It is important to keep the treated area clean for 48 hrs post treatment to prevent infection. For those who are concerned with redness and inflamation the option of incorporating LED treatments to reduce post-treatment irritation is available so there’s virtually no down time.

What causes unwanted hair growth?

Hair growth is often traced to hereditary factor, and sometimes stress and certain illnesses can stimulate growth. In addition some temporary methods of hair removal, certain drugs and medications or just the normal hormonal changes at different stages in life can all affect hair growth.

We have recently seen a great increase in facial hair being stimulated by laser hair reduction and encourage anyone thinking of undergoing laser on chin/neck or sideburns to speak to us first.

How long does Electrolysis take?

Each individual hair removal case has to be assessed and for this reason it is essential to have a full consultation prior to treatment*

The hairs that are removed during Electrolysis will never regrow, but while there are still active hair follicles regrowth will take place. Permanent hair removal is a gradual process and with each treatment the hair growth becomes less. If the hairs have previously been removed by plucking or other methods before starting the treatment a permanent removal will require more sessions. Depending on how much superfluous hair is needed to be removed you may require Electrolysis sessions weekly or fortnightly, extending to intervals of 3 weeks or 6 weeks between treatments until finally only check up treatments once a year will be all that is required. At the initial consultation your electrologist will be able to give you an estimation of the number of the sessions necessary.

Will you need to know anything about me?

The initial consultation is always an important part of the Electrolysis procedure. The information required will be: the area to be worked on, type of hair growth, if the hair has been previously removed by plucking or other methods of temporary removal. Age and general health questions will be asked, if there are any medical problems, or whether any recent illness has required medication.

Is Electrolysis safe?

Electrolysis Hair Removal is approved by the medical profession and has been available for over 100 years. You may have heard in the media about “cross infection” risks – we always use Sterex Sterile Disposable Needles recommended by the Public Health Laboratory Service. Under Electrolysis Hair Removal Treatment, every client has a new sterile needle for his/her treatment. The individually packed needles remain sealed and sterile until opened for your treatment and they are immediately disposed of thereafter.

Body Machine Electrolysis

We are proud to be one of the only salons in Melbourne offering Multiprobe electrolysis. Suitable for large areas and all hair types, Body machine is perfect for treating hair that can not be otherwise treated with IPL or laser because of the nature of the hair (hormonal vs. terminal), or for the fine hair that is sometimes left over after a course of permanent hair reduction treatments. Learn more about this amazing permanent treatment here.

How much will Electrolysis cost?

The cost of treatment is worked out in units of time from 5/10 minutes to an hour. Your electrologist will be able to give an approximate number of treatments required before a permanent removal is achieved during your initial consultation. When considering the cost of treatment, it should be remembered how much time and money will be spent in a lifetimes pursuit of hair removal by temporary methods.
